Rectory Road
Rectory Road is a haven for wildlife at a sleepy station in North Hackney. The garden was established in October 2020 thanks to the efforts of local groups including Stoke Newington Common Users Group (SNUG), Nightingale Estate Residents’ Association, Rectory Road Residents’ Association and GoodGym Hackney.
Over the past three seasons, the garden has turned from a neglected space, filled with grass, brambles and nettles, to a species-rich area of beauty and buzz. It comprises 200m2 of trackside space, including a gravel pathway, two pallet composters and four planters on the platform.
The garden was designed by the residents to account for drought tolerance, seasonal colour and wildlife habitat improvement. These principles continue to influence our decision making with every new plant addition and garden expansion. It currently includes dwarf fruit trees, hundreds of perennial plants, native wildflowers and wild hops.
The group is comprised of 48 local residents. We meet most Saturdays from 10:00-12:00. Email morwenna@energygarden.org.uk to get involved.

Horticultural description: This garden group is focused on sustainable gardening practices; favouring rescued plants, drought tolerant and native species and often using dividing and propagating techniques. They are also testing the capacity of their drought planting scheme by not watering the garden, thus encouraging climate conscious planting decisions and low water usage.
