The first community-owned solar project on UK railway
On Wednesday, 9th March, 2021, at 10:10AM, our first solar system at GTR Streatham Traincare Depot finally went live and has generated clean, green renewable energy ever since. Our Streatham project was the first community-owned solar project on the UK rail network and not only has it exceeded our expectations for generation, it also provides a proven case study for our model to support the delivery of future projects.
The project represents a real milestone for Energy Garden as it required a lengthy process to secure approval from the Department for Transport at a time when the rail industry was undergoing significant change as part of the National Rail Contract review. Due to the complicated arrangements surrounding the ownership of the UK’s rail network, obtaining DfT approval was the final stage in a pent-partite review by no fewer than five separate legal teams to ensure that our Lease Agreement and Power Purchase Agreements met the aims and objectives of all parties.
