Canonbury

Canonbury Energy Garden is an eye-catching garden outside the entrance to Canonbury Station. When this garden began in 2016, it was made up of planters on the platforms. In 2020, we were granted permission to take over the planters in front of the station; this was a massive boost to the garden and now planting and maintaining those planters is our main goal.

At this garden, you will find a planting scheme that designed by local residents: it is mostly drought-tolerant and native species that will withstand heatwaves as well as the wear and tear of urban life. The plant selection also aims to improve local biodiversity and important habitat.

When attending a volunteer session you can expect to meet other volunteers who are members of your local community and work alongside them to do regular garden maintenance tasks such as weeding, watering and pruning. We also plant bulbs throughout the year as well as mature plants to fill in gaps in the planting scheme.

Throughout the year there are educational sessions on topics like seed saving, propagating, compost management and biodiversity surveying which are open to you. Don’t let a lack of gardening experience hold you back as our aim is to have a garden where all skill levels are welcome and learning is encouraged.

The group is comprised of 45 local residents. We meet on Thursdays 16:30-18:00. Sign up via the Join a Garden Group link on the home page or email beatrice@energygarden.org.uk to get involved.

Canonbury Station Garden at a glance:

Size: 108m2, three large planters at street level and 3 small planters on the bridge inside the station

Built elements: Large trellises in street level planters and gravel pathway.

Horticultural description: Two of the three large planters at street level were replanted by volunteers in the Spring of 2023 with drought tolerant native plants. We planted at a high density which we think will lead to a high survival rate, check in during the growing season in 2024 to see how it goes!
