Community-owned Energy

Together, we will bring 2.5MW of new community-owned solar into generation by 2025

We find the rooftops

Energy Garden staff carry out the technical aspects of developing a solar project, including the due diligence, feasibility studies, business case and partnership development. With the rooftop ready, all that’s left is to raise the money as a community to pay for the solar panels.

You invest

Invest from £50 in a community share offer. We issue 1-2 of these each year, and may have one open at the moment. Your investment automatically enrols you as a member of the Community Benefit Society, a one-member-one-vote structure that decides how the profits are spent. We are currently accepting pledges to invest in our next offer, opening May 2024.

Our partners install the panels

Our partners Carbon3 carry out the installation of the panels and all other technical aspects of the install, including connection to the grid.

We sell the energy

Building owners, corporates and individuals can purchase 100% renewable community-owned energy directly from our Community Benefit Society. Read about our pioneering Corporate Power Purchase Agreement here.

We oversee the projects

We manage the projects across their 20-25 year lifespans, managing the returns on investment while also using the excess revenues to fund our gardens, community engagement and education programmes.

You vote to improve the company

Each year, we have an Annual General Meeting, where members meet, discuss Energy Garden and share ideas for improvement. All members are eligible for election to the Board of Directors.

Hear from our supporters

The Mayor’s London Environment Strategy sets out his vision to achieve a zero-carbon, greener London. The Mayor cannot achieve these objectives alone and we welcome the range of innovative new community investment models being created around the city. Projects like Energy Garden not only create new green spaces but allow Londoners to get involved in renewable energy programmes that benefit their local area.
— Shirley Rodrigues, London Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy

London Overground is often at the heart of the communities it serves, so it has been great to partner with Energy Garden to help make our stations look and feel even better for our customers. With many successful community-led gardens already in place and more to come, we welcome the news of the National Lottery funding to further support the great work Energy Gardens is doing.
— Rory O'Neil, TfL's General Manager for London Overground

By purchasing electricity from Energy Garden, Patagonia not only ensures a clean, green, zero carbon emission energy supply for their stores but also provides additional support for a whole range of social and environmental benefits. For every kilowatt of electricity from Energy Garden, Patagonia is also paying an additional “Social Premium” to support Energy Garden’s work with local communities.

What you’re doing is really exciting because it’s visible to the public, and brings increased awareness on the importance of biodiversity and renewable energy, as well as getting young people involved in a meaningful way.

It’s a good thing Energy Garden has diversified, most companies do either one or the other (of social/ environmental) but you do it all!

I believe in community energy projects. I think the statement ‘think globally, act locally’ is often underrated, and that Energy Garden reflects these values.
